A special THANK YOU goes out to Chad Wollenberg for writing and playing my podcast’s music! Chad is the host of “The Linux Basement” podcast.

The Windows and Linux segments are sort of intertwined this week ;-)

00:28 - Ubuntu Linux Hardy Heron v8.04 LTS

03:31 - Setting a Static IP in your Ubuntu desktop.

03:51 - Remote Desktop Control in Ubuntu. This is just about the same in other Gnome desktop distributions of Linux.

05:23 - TightVNC is a free remote desktop software for Windows and Linux

06:10 - Webmin is a free GUI Administration application for Linux. These two Webmin links are a little dated but still worth checking out here and here.

07:47 - The Synaptic Package Manager is the utility in Ubuntu, and many other Linux distributions, for installing and removing applications within Ubuntu.

08:44 - snapfiles.com is my favorite site for freeware apps for Windows

09:45 - OpenSSH server allows you SSH into your Linux machine from another PC.

13:30 - yum is the “Yellowdog Updater, Modified” is the package manager in most rpm based Linux distros.

22:35 - My Gateway M675 laptop which is running *crazy hot* with XP Pro. Note: As of writing these show notes, I installed WUBI Ubuntu Hardy Heron and will see if runs cooler, I’ll let you know.

23:25 - Getting a Windows PC to halt on a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) instead of the dreaded Re-boot Loop of Death. Before your XP machine starts having problems, Right click on My Computer, choose Properties, click the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery click Settings, un-check Automatically restart under System failure. This will prevent endless reboots in the event of a BSoD.

26:55 - “The PC Decrapifier” is a free application for Windows that will remove unwanted third party Windows applications

28:20 - Symantec Removal Tool will remove corrupted installs of Symantec product installs.

30:25 - WUBI Ubuntu installer allows you to setup a dual install of Ubuntu on a Windows machine with a small exe. Should you ever wish to remove Ubuntu from your XP machine simply go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, and click Remove ant to Ubuntu.

34:05 - A net install of Ubuntu Linux using WUBI-Ubuntu Installer.

35:20 - What is the gvfs-fuse-daemon?

36:30 - The Geek Gadget segment of the show.

36:40 - Radio Controlled Wrist Watches and Clocks.

36:55 - What’s a “Watch Geek”?

36:55 - Geeky watches.

36:59 - The Alumni web site for Spring Garden College. Philadelphia, PA. I was the first person to sign the guest book in 1997, now there are thousands of names!

37:30 - The town I grew up in, Lansdale, PA.

37:50 - MUST SEE - Vintage 20 minute movie about The Hamilton Watch Company.

37:55 - Today’s Hamilton Watch Company, not your granndfather’s hamilton Watch Company.

39:01 - Junghans Radio Controlled Wrist Watches. and here.
